Candlemas Day; Purification of the Blessed Virgin

Finally, brethren, be strengthened in the Lord, and in the might of his power. Put you on the armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil. Ephesians 6:10-11

On the Lighter Side…

The Perp has Fallen and He Can’t Get Up!

Edit. You’re always safe at Babcia’s (Grandma in Polish) house.

California Councilwoman: You Can Be Shot By An Unloaded Gun!

Edit. Can you believe this? Who voted for this clown-ette anyway? It says a lot about her constituency, doesn’t it? If you look up the word dumb in the dictionary you’ll see her picture. It’s my understanding they only let her use crayons when she writes her bill proposals.

Food prices on the rise, could triple

The price increase can be blamed on a perfect storm of problems. Nationwide, the average cost of gas has jumped $0.08 over last month, and freezing temperatures on the West Coast are ruining crops.

Edit. While the increasing costs are blamed on local conditions, i.e., there is a global demand that is building because of increasingly scarcer supply, as well as, immoral manipulation of both price and supply by unscrupulous commodity traders at wholesale levels and commodities markets. Couple this with the increasing use of viable food growing farmland to bio-diesel fuels and bio-gasoline additives and you can easily see that supply is falling.

The first and best solution is to grow your own, this would help ensure, not only adequate supply , but also better quality. The second solution is, of course, to stock up food staples and canned goods, both prepper-type long term storage foods and just double you purchases of canned goods at the local grocery store every week.

Risky Student Debt Is Starting to Sour

“If you become subprime, it’s more likely that you will not pay your debt,” said TransUnion Vice President Ezra Becker, who oversaw the study.

The high debt loads could weigh on consumer spending and the economy, said Cristian de Ritis, a senior director with Moody’s Analytics, a unit of Moody’s Corp. If the defaults continue to increase, “the taxpayer is going to be on the hook for losses,” he added.

The federal government has taken a more active role in student lending and now makes about 93% of all loans.

Edit.  For months economists have been warning that the student loan issue will be the next debt bubble. It is predicted to equal or even dwarf the sub-prime mortgage scandal of 2006 through 2008. The outcome will be different as there will be no bailouts because most student loans today are underwritten by government, that is, you and I the US Taxpayer; the ultimate cash cow.

As the economy continues to tank and business suffers, there will be less adequately paying jobs for the students who made the assumption that they would be looking at $100,000 salaries out of the starting gate. This will naturally lead to greater and greater defaults. Essentially, it will become a fission type of chain reaction.

So if you are thinking of sending your kids to college, the better course appears to be to send them to trade schools to acquire marketable skills that may not make them rich, but certainly will allow them to make a living for themselves and families.

The 8 Retailers That Will Close the Most Stores in 2013

For many U.S. retailers, the sales situation is so bad that it is not a question of whether they will cut stores, but when and how many.

After years in an unsteady economic climate, being battered by e-commerce on one hand and more effective bricks-and-mortar competitors on the other, these chains need the relief that shrinking can provide.

Rumors of Wars…

Serious Escalation: Israeli Jets Conduct Syria Airstrike

Israel conducted a rare airstrike on a military target inside Syria near the border with Lebanon, foreign officials and Syrian state TV said Wednesday, amid fears President Bashar Assad’s regime could provide powerful weapons to the Islamic militant group Hezbollah.

Regional security officials said Israel had been planning in the days leading up to the airstrike to hit a shipment of weapons bound for Hezbollah, Lebanon’s most powerful military force and a sworn enemy of the Jewish state. Among Israeli officials’ chief fears is that Assad will pass chemical weapons or sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles to Hezbollah – something that could change the balance of power in the region and greatly hinder Israel’s ability to conduct air sorties in Lebanon.

Edit.  This is a very confusing situation as various reports of exactly what the target was and who was involved is being reported differently, depending on the outlook of the reporting agency. The only concrete thing to which all agree is that Israel did make an incursion into Syrian airspace and did attack on Syrian soil.

The first article that I read on this event stated that it was a Russian weapons convoy that was struck on Syrian soil. Now we know that both Russia and China are allies of the Syria’s Assad, but their actual involvement in “boots on the ground” operations involving Russian military convoys adds another layer to this stinking onion. I’ve since to read anything further on this, however.

Faith and Morals…

Sermon from Father Hewko on the Feast of the Holy Family; January 13, 2013 – Charlotte, NC

The union of the husband and wife is consecrated to God. It is blessed in the sacredness of Marriage. Our Lord elevated the contract of marriage to a Sacrament. This means, that when a man and a women, and no other, as designed by God, get married, God blesses them and they receive what is called a Nuptial Blessing.

Fr. David Hewko, Jan. 11, 2013 Sanford, FL

Edit.  This is truly an appropriate sermon for this oft overlooked feast day. A traditional Catholic family, all members, should model themselves after the Holy Family.

Please note the venue of this Mass and sermon. It is a private house. Also notice that the altar boys do not have vestments. Could it be that, once again we are back in the catacombs of basements, garages, hotel rooms, and other beg and borrowed locales? Please support these priests of the resistance; they need our help in order to offer the traditional Sacraments in a pristine and completely traditional manner.

Health and Wellness: formerly called Emerging Illnesses (Pestilence)…

Doctors kill 2,450% more Americans than all gun-related deaths combined

It’s true: You are 64 times more likely to be killed by your doctor than by someone else wielding a gun. That’s because 19,766 of the total 31,940 gun deaths in the USA (in the year 2011) were suicides. So the actual number of deaths from other people shooting you is only 12,174.

Edit. Funny… how when things are put into a rational perspective, it presents a whole new view of the situation.

The Times They Are a Changin’…

Why Scouts are rethinking ‘gay’ policy

Activists shamed corporate donors that tout diversity, tolerance

Speaking for the BSA National Council, Director of Public Relations Deron Smith explained the organization is discussing allowing, the local, chartered organizations that oversee Scouting to establish their own requirements.

BSA members and parents “would be able to choose a local unit which best meets the needs of their families,” Smith said.

He said BSA leadership “has always been in an ongoing dialogue with the Scouting family to determine what is in the best interest of the organization and the young people we serve.”

Edit. Wow! Say it isn’t so… The Boys Scouts of America that once instilled honor, courage, and other manly and vital virtues into our youth are would seem to be succumbing to political and financial pressure. Perhaps it is time they reread their Scout Handbooks on capitulating to peer pressure in the face of moral decisions. This shouldn’t even be in the corporate boards discussion, let alone as advanced as letting local chapters determine what is right for them.

For Catholics, this should be the bellwether needed to spur a founding of a Catholic version of the Boy Scouts, perhaps called The Rangers, which would carry on the traditional values of not only the Catholic Faith but also the tradition of the BSA.

Getting back to the Boy Scouts, it makes one wonder exactly what merit badges will be issued ten or twenty years down the road? I shudder to think about it.

Politics and more…

Jesse Jackson Calls for Looting Pension Funds

In plain terms, Jackson is advocating a smash and grab theft of pension money. His criminal ilk controls the government and is likely to loot America to the point of total collapse.

Edit. Does it come as a surprise that this meeting of the left is not even covered by mainstream media in the least bit? Of course not! It would seem that the jackals are beginning to fight over the carcass of a once great nation. For more than half of Obama’s first term there were rumblings of misappropriating private retirement funds and redirecting them into Treasury vehicles. Now we find that NGO’s also have an eye on our hard-earned pensions.

It is obvious that this is just another egalitarian attempt to put everyone on and equal footing, that is, poor and dependent on the whims of government bureaucracy for morsels of sustenance.

Surprise Study: Majority of U.S. Public Distrusts Fed Gov’t, Claims It’s a Threat to Personal Freedom

The American people are overwhelmingly frustrated by the federal government, with public trust in the institution near historic lows. To add to these troubling indicators, a new Pew Research Center study also finds that, for the first time, a majority of the U.S. public believes that the government threatens their “personal rights and freedoms.”

Edit.  This is certainly not a surprising finding, but like every other American popular aspect there will be little done to remedy the situation. Americans will still go on to elect pitiful representatives as they fritter away the time better used on activism for Dancing With the Stars and Sunday sports. Oh well, on to the Super bowl.

Let the men of wisdom speak…

Monsignor Jean-Joseph Gaume (b. at Fuans, Franche-Comté in 1802; d. in 1879) was a French Roman Catholic theologian and author. While attached to the Diocese of Nevers, he was successively professor of theology, director of the petit séminaire, canon, and vicar-general of the diocese, and had already published several works, when he left for Rome in 1841.

Pope Gregory XVI made him a knight of the Reformed Order of St. Sylvester. A doctor of theology of the University of Prague, a member of several societies of scholars, honorary vicar-general of several dioceses, he received from Pope Pius IX in 1854 the title of prothonotary apostolic.

See what is happening around you; understand both the signs of the times and things you have been told of, and the terrible dangers threatening you. Seduction surrounds you on all sides: in the laws, in morals, in books, in speeches, in the public and private behavior of the people. The number and authority of Catholic truths is shrinking day by day amongst the children of men. Understand all that well: be firmly convinced that your position was never more critical. Draw the conclusion not that you must withdraw from the world, but that you must keep yourself from evil; and, at all costs, keep what is dear to you from evil. More than in any other time, every Catholic must be a soldier to his last breath. If you have a clear understanding of the formidable trial awaiting you and which you are already undergoing, it will fill you with great courage and holy joy. It is the unshakeable proof of your faith and the rock-solid foundation of your hopes because it is the tangible fulfilment of the prophecies of your Divine Master.

Did he not say, 1800 years ago, that toward the end of times, the nations would universally apostatize; that the faith would grow so weak that it would give out only a glimmer of light; that iniquity would overflow like an impetuous torrent across the face of the entire earth and that the charity of the great number would grow cold? Did he not say that there would arise a multitude of false prophets, precursors of the Man of Sin; that God would count for nothing; and that at the same time the Gospel would reach all the way around the world? Did he not say that he was foretelling these things to prevent your being scandalized by the passing triumph of wicked men; to prevent your saying in your heart: Christ is asleep; he has given up on us? All these things foretold by God, do you not have the impression of seeing them, at least in part, fulfilled beneath your very eyes? Then have a clear understanding of your position, and lift your head bowed beneath the weight of grief, humiliations and fear. The great struggle against Christ is both the proof of your faith and the dawning of the day of justice, when right order in everything will be re-established, never again to be disturbed.

Do not content yourselves with seeing all this, but also watch; what I say to you, I say to all: Watch. Many men in Noah’s time did not recognize the warning signs of the Flood, nor in the century of Our Lord’s death the warning signs of the destruction of Jerusalem: so it will be at the end of the times (Where are we headed?, pages 198-200).

Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.

Domestically Speaking…

Well, seed packets, planting trays, seed starting soil, and other accoutrements of the upcoming gardening season have made their way into the retail outlets. Several things I noticed about this year’s offering of seeds are that there are more and more organic labels as well as heirloom varieties available. That said however, there are many varieties offered as organic and heirloom of which I’ve never before seen. Needless to say, that many of the organic and heirloom offerings have either a higher price tag or smaller weight; sometimes both.

Additionally, many of the old standbys are seemingly not available, like Golden Acre Cabbage. It strikes me that there is a distinct chance that many of these species and varieties my not all be as organic, open-pollinated, and heirloom as advertised. In the end we can never know for sure unless we save seed directly from our gardens themselves. This is an important aspect of gardening which should be incorporated into your garden plans.

In the greenhouse, meantime, I’m still plagued by inconsistent heating with the ventless LP heater. I’ve gone the rounds with both the supply house and the manufacturer and replaced parts as suggested but I’m still having difficulty maintaining proper heating levels and some of my more sensitive plants have died.

Frustrated with this situation I discussed it with my son, the plumber; he informed me that at lower temperatures the LP gas can be affected. This however, did not make much sense to me as I’ve seen while driving down the road that many homes, restaurants, and businesses have the large 1,000 gallon tanks in their yards and if these are not affected by the temperatures then why would mine?

So, as is my wont, I started to do research into the subject. As it turns out, not all Liquid Propane is the same. Basically, it is rare to get pure LP gas from a supplier. Different energy companies use different mixtures of LP gas with other gases, predominately butane. I’m assuming that this is some way of stretching supplies or the butane is cheaper to buy, so the companies blend in the butane to spread the margin between costs and retail sales prices; thus increasing profits. Anyhow, it seems that the butane will liquefy at higher temps than the LP so this affects the gaseous state of the entire container. With the extreme cold we’ve had this January and even December, the gas flow is interrupted and thus the pilot goes out shutting down the heat.

This bears out my experience with this heater. Last year, a warm winter season, the unit worked flawlessly. This year during the cold snaps is when I had the most trouble. We’ve had temps as low as -2° F. at times. Also over the past three or four days, we had temps at or above freezing and the unit worked for many hours. With the return of lower temps on Friday, the same pattern of failure emerged. I can, of course, watch this during the daytime hours, but at night, (when most needed) I can’t monitor as effectively.

This means, therefore, that I must supplement with an electric heater, but unfortunately I’ve not found a reliable heater with a thermostat to switch on when the LP unit fails. I sure I will have more on this next issue of CRS.

Putting It all In Perspective & Final commentary…

This certainly has been an active week on many fronts. The Liberal/Socialist agenda is proceeding apace with the inauguration of President Obama to his second and final term. Right now he has carte blanche in his Presidency and he will have little to slow his pace because he knows he cannot be elected to a third consecutive term. His party, of course, will try to put on some brakes but they are largely heady with power and will virtually go along with the agenda.

Amazingly, the threat to the 2nd Amendment Right to bear arms has galvanized many citizens to action but, without sounding overly pessimistic, our legislators and representatives, both State and Federal, will ramrod through their plans to curtail our rights despite great public opposition.

The disheartening development with the BSA capitulating to the financial, political, and cultural powers to even think of allowing Sodomites within its ranks demonstrates the juggernaut of the Sodomite agenda specifically, and the Liberal Socialist agenda in general. Even in our churches cries for legitimizing domestic partnerships are becoming a growing chorus; yes, even within the Catholic Churches. Do you think otherwise, then where is the great Catholic mobilization of the Faith by the bishops and priests shown here in Connecticut when the State threatened to intervene in Church affairs within the State two years ago? Surely, if the Church wished she could call on her Faithful to fill the streets praying and demonstrating against the evils of Sodomy. However, the Church is conflicted. Many believe to the core that personal morality, including homosexuality, is a right. So personal freedom trumps Catholic teaching of the ages; indeed, most Catholics are of the world rather than in the world.

With our times seemingly like the times of Noe or the times of Sodom and Gomorrah, I wonder if the good Monsignor Gaume, quoted above, would still feel that a retreat from the world is counterproductive; if only to protect the innocence of our children and to form a Faith-based social support system. Surely, the times at which he wrote were quite innocent compared to the evils of our day when even shame does not silence the evildoers.

Certainly, retiring to the countryside may be the most prudent thing to do at this time. In not to preserve the agrarian foundations of the Church but in the least protect and preserve our souls and those in our charge.

So pray fervently the Rosary for the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

About Catholic Rural Solutions

This group is for the practical application of Catholic Distributist teachings as promoted by Pope St. Pius X, Belloc, Chesterton, Maurin and others in the 20th century. This group is also a respite for traditional Catholics who adhere to the Tridentine Rite of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and who share a concern for small independent Catholic communities throughout the world. These communities while primarily small holding farmers, craftsmen and tradesman all espouse an integrated life based on Catholic Social Justice and the Sacred Magisterium of the Church. Through this we intend to inject the Distributist economic principles into the greater society. Please fell free to share your experiences in this vein. Flaming, proselytizing and persecution WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
