We’ve all heard about the NSA spying program(s) that, thanks to arch-whistleblower Mr. Edward Snowden, has had the spotlight cast upon it, however, what most American either fail to realize or deliberately ignore is that spying and surveillance of the average American citizen has been occurring since at least 1982. Yes, way back into the Ronald Reagan Presidency!
Believed to have originated with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in 1982, in response to Ronald Reagan’s Continuity of Operations plan outlined in the National Security Directive (NSD) 69 / National Security Decision Directive (NSDD) 55, entitled “Enduring National Leadership,” implemented on September 14, 1982, a database was initiated known by the code name Main Core. Main Core contains personal and financial data of millions of U.S. citizens reckoned to be threats to national security. The database’s name derives from the fact that it contains copies of the ‘main core’ or essential items of intelligence information on Americans produced by agencies of the U.S. intelligence community. The existence of the database was first reported on in May 2008 by Christopher Ketchum of RADAR Onlineand also by many online blogs and Salon.com, an online magazine.
In a Salon.com article one of their journalists did some digging into Main Core and what he found merely confirms what Snowden had to say. Although the article was lengthy and detailed, this particular passage stands out and should make the hair of the back of the neck of every red-blooded American stand out:
The following information seems to be fair game for collection without a warrant: the e-mail addresses you send to and receive from, and the subject lines of those messages; the phone numbers you dial, the numbers that dial in to your line, and the durations of the calls; the Internet sites you visit and the keywords in your Web searches; the destinations of the airline tickets you buy; the amounts and locations of your ATM withdrawals; and the goods and services you purchase on credit cards. All of this information is archived on government supercomputers and, according to sources, also fed into the Main Core database.
Now many readers may be thinking: “well, what is wrong with the government keeping an eye on subversive radicals who potentially can harm to the nation?”, and on the surface they would be correct. The problem comes into play when we try to interpret who is a “subversive radical” and a potential enemy of the state. Since 9/11 many citizens and groups have come under scrutiny via a loose and trivial set of parameters as “potential” subversives; groups as diverse as Pro-life protesters, 2nd Amendment advocates, and Constitutionalists. Indeed, even some fundamentalist and conservative religious groups have been under the microscope.
[Aside: How far we’ve come when truly subversive radicals like the Weather Underground, The Young Lords, The Black Panthers, and other left-wing criminal groups openly advocated the overthrow of the status quo; indeed, many of the leaders of such groups are now in key and influential positions within education, government, and media. They are the driving force behind such draconian policies and programs like as Main Core.]
Now fast forward to 2014… Our illustrious nominally Catholic Governor of New York State, Andrew Cuomo, has advised the nation that Pro-lifers and other extreme conservatives are not welcome in NY. Here is the actual quote:
Their (Republicans) problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves,” he said. “Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are, and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.
Truly frightening! No? This constitutes a foundational change from a free Democratic Republic which our founding fathers envisioned and designed. When those of peaceful political positions and ideology are falsely singled out as subversive radicals and who are not only marginalized but actually rejected from participating in the public political forum for nothing more than political, cultural, social, and religious views that go against the dominant power structures of society, it is clearly a signal that something fundamental has changed in our form of government. Will the next step be that we will be denied participation in the democratic system of voting and representation? One has to wonder. Based on all the foregoing it is an valid assumption that anybody who’s ever spoken out against the government, in any medium, is on the list and will be the first to be paid a visit should SHTF, and any sort of martial law is declared. It is ironic that the very massive spy network being used to ‘protect’ us from terrorism is dissolving into a paranoid police state.
Correspondingly shocking, is the lack of protest over both the Main Core and the recent statements of Cuomo. The silence is deafening! I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but the vast majority of Americans simply refuse to see what is happening; largely because it might interfere with their bread and circuses. They are essentially delusional and exist in a Pinocchio-like Pleasure Island. They refuse to read blogs like CRS and to keep themselves informed, yet I’m sure they are all up-to-date on the SuperBowl happenings including post game maneuvers; and even delighted in the bald-faced commercialization of the much lauded SuperBowl ads and commercials. The willful ignorance of the average American never ceases to amaze me.
